What Are the First Signs of a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc occurs when disc material moves beyond its usual space and irritates or presses on a nearby nerve. Lower Back Pain or Neck Pain may appear first. Nerve irritation can then cause radiating leg pain, arm pain, pins and needles, reduced sensation, or weakness in a pattern related to the affected nerve. Some disc changes cause no symptoms, and similar complaints can come from muscle, joints, or other nerve conditions.

Keep gently active as tolerated and change position regularly rather than staying in bed for long periods. Avoid lifting or twisting that clearly worsens symptoms. Arrange a clinical assessment if pain persists, travels into a limb, or affects strength or sensation. Depending on the examination, care may include rehabilitation, Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression, or an Epidural Steroid Injection. Microdiscectomy is considered only when specific findings and symptoms warrant it.

Go to emergency care for new difficulty passing urine, loss of bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, or rapidly worsening weakness. This pattern can signal Cauda Equina Syndrome and needs immediate assessment. Seek prompt help for severe pain after trauma, fever with back pain, or unexplained progressive neurological changes.
