What are the first signs of common cold?

Cold symptoms usually build around the nose and throat as the airways respond to a viral infection. Nasal mucus may become thicker, and a cough can develop as mucus irritates the throat. Some people also have a mild temperature, headache, hoarse voice, or ear pressure.

Symptoms can resemble other respiratory illnesses. A blocked nose or cough alone cannot identify the cause. Laryngitis, sinusitis, or a middle-ear infection can develop as complications or occur separately, particularly when symptoms change rather than gradually improve.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoke while your body recovers. Warm drinks or simple throat care may ease irritation. Ask a pharmacist about suitable symptom relief if you take regular medicines, are pregnant, or have a long-term condition.

Reduce close contact while you feel unwell, wash your hands, and cover coughs and sneezes. Antibiotics do not treat the viruses that cause ordinary colds. Track whether symptoms are improving, stable, or becoming more focused in one area.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, or inability to stay awake. Contact a clinician if a high or persistent fever, severe earache, facial pain, dehydration, or worsening symptoms concern you, especially if you have a weakened immune system.
