What are the first signs of bronchiectasis?

Bronchiectasis can make the airways wider and less effective at clearing mucus. A daily Cough may bring up thick or coloured phlegm, especially after waking. Some people notice wheezing, reduced exercise tolerance, tiredness, or chest discomfort. Repeated infections that take longer to settle can be a clue. A symptom does not confirm bronchiectasis; asthma, infection, reflux, and other lung conditions can produce similar changes.

Book a medical appointment for a persistent productive cough, recurring chest infections, or new Shortness of Breath. Describe the phlegm, triggers, infection history, smoking or workplace exposures, and any previous lung illness. Assessment may include a Chest X-Ray, breathing tests such as Spirometry, and other investigations chosen from your history.

Seek urgent help for significant Coughing Up Blood, severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue lips, confusion, fainting, or chest pain. A small streak may still require prompt clinical advice, particularly if it recurs. Fever with marked deterioration or inability to keep fluids down also warrants same-day assessment.
