Short answer

The first signs of an ankle fracture may include intense pain, rapid swelling, inability to bear weight, bruising, or a visible change in ankle shape.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How an ankle fracture may present

An ankle fracture commonly follows a fall, twist, impact, or awkward landing. Pain may be focused around the ankle bones and can worsen when standing or moving. Swelling and bruising may develop quickly, and the joint may feel stiff or unstable. A fracture can occur even when the ankle still looks fairly normal, while a severe sprain can produce similar symptoms. An examination and X-ray or other imaging are used to determine whether a bone is broken.

What to do now

Do not force the ankle to walk or straighten. Keep it supported in the position found, raise the leg if comfortable, and place a cold pack wrapped in cloth over the swollen area for short periods. Avoid food or drink if urgent surgery might be considered, unless a clinician tells you otherwise. Medical assessment can determine whether Fracture Casting or Fracture Fixation Surgery is needed.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for a visible deformity, an open wound near the injury, severe or worsening pain, or inability to bear weight after significant trauma. Immediate help is also needed if the foot becomes numb, pale, blue, or unusually cold. Prompt assessment of a possible Ankle Fracture protects the joint and helps prevent an untreated injury from healing out of position.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which bone or joint surface is involved, whether imaging is complete, and whether the ankle must remain non-weight-bearing. Clarify the type of support required, warning signs to monitor, and when movement or follow-up should begin.

Questions people ask

Can I have a fracture if I can still walk?

Yes. Some fractures allow limited walking, so the ability to bear weight does not rule out a broken bone.

Is swelling enough to tell whether the ankle is fractured?

No. Swelling occurs with fractures and sprains, and imaging may be needed to distinguish them.
