What are the first signs of allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is an immune reaction on the surface of the eye. Itching is a particularly useful clue, and rubbing can increase swelling and irritation. Watery discharge, puffy eyelids and sensitivity to bright light may accompany the redness.

Allergic rhinitis can occur at the same time, bringing sneezing or a runny nose. Sticky discharge, marked pain or a change in vision is less typical and may point to another eye problem. Symptoms alone cannot identify the exact trigger.

Avoid the suspected trigger where possible, wash your hands before touching your face and use a cool clean compress over closed eyelids. Try not to rub your eyes or share towels, cosmetics or eye drops. Replace eye makeup used during a flare if advised by a pharmacist.

Allergy medication may ease symptoms, but the right product depends on age, pregnancy, other medicines and eye health. Allergy testing can be considered when episodes recur or the trigger is unclear.

Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, sudden vision change, significant light sensitivity, an eye injury, a chemical splash or swelling that affects breathing. Arrange review for one-sided redness, thick discharge, contact-lens-related redness or symptoms that do not settle.
