What are the alternatives to vertebroplasty?

A vertebral compression fracture is assessed using the injury history, examination, imaging, pain pattern, bone health, and any nerve symptoms. Many plans begin with carefully managed pain relief, avoiding heavy lifting, short-term support when appropriate, and a gradual return to movement. Treatment also addresses bone strength when osteoporosis or another bone problem contributed to the fracture.

Kyphoplasty is a procedure in which a balloon may be used to create a space before material is placed inside the vertebra. It differs from vertebroplasty in technique and should not be assumed to suit every fracture. Bone cement is a material used in cement augmentation procedures; learning about the material does not determine whether a procedure is needed.

Ask the clinician what the imaging shows, how stable the fracture appears, and whether pain is improving with conservative care. Discuss safe positions, walking, lifting limits, and a rehabilitation plan. Bring a list of medicines and tell the team about previous fractures, cancer history, fever, or new changes in strength or sensation.

Avoid prolonged bed rest unless specifically advised, because reduced movement can weaken muscles and make recovery harder. Increase activity in small steps and follow the fracture plan until healing and spinal stability have been reviewed.

Seek urgent care for new leg weakness, numbness that is spreading, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe pain after a major injury. Fever, unexplained illness, or rapidly worsening back pain also needs prompt assessment. These features can point to nerve involvement, infection, or a different cause of spinal pain.
