What are the alternatives to tumour ablation?

A surgeon may remove part or all of an affected organ when the tumour can be safely resected. Liver resection removes a portion of the liver; kidney removal surgery may remove part or all of a kidney. Radiotherapy can treat a defined area, while medicines may be used when disease is widespread or responds to systemic treatment. Observation with repeated scans can be considered for selected small or slow-changing tumours. The decision differs for kidney cancer, liver cancer and liver metastases, including the number of lesions, their position, nearby blood vessels and how well the remaining organ can function.

Ask whether the goal is cure, local control, symptom relief or delaying another treatment. Request an explanation of how the tumour’s size, location and relation to blood vessels affect the options. Discuss recovery, anaesthesia, possible effects on organ function and the scan schedule after treatment. If persistent abdominal pain is part of the picture, describe its location, timing and triggers rather than assuming it identifies the tumour or its cause.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, fainting, new yellowing of the skin or eyes, vomiting blood, black stools, heavy bleeding, fever with shaking chills, or sudden confusion. These signs can signal a complication or another urgent illness and should be assessed promptly.
