What are the alternatives to pap smear?

A Pap smear collects cervical cells and checks them for changes. An HPV test looks for high-risk types of human papillomavirus that can cause cervical cell changes. Depending on local guidance, an HPV test may be used as primary screening, or the sample may support both HPV testing and cell analysis. A positive HPV result does not by itself mean that cancer is present; it signals that follow-up may be needed. Colposcopy uses magnification to inspect the cervix and may include a small biopsy. It is generally a diagnostic follow-up rather than a comfortable substitute for routine screening. HPV infection is common and often clears, but persistent high-risk infection can require monitoring.

Ask which cervical screening method is offered in your area and whether the sample is collected by a clinician or through an approved self-collection pathway.
