What are the alternatives to nuchal translucency scan?

NIPT uses a blood sample to screen for selected chromosome conditions, including Down syndrome. It does not replace every part of an ultrasound assessment. A dating scan confirms gestational age and checks early pregnancy development, while an anomaly scan examines anatomy later in pregnancy. These scans answer different questions and may still be offered even when you choose blood-based screening.

A nuchal translucency scan can be combined with other information to estimate the chance of some chromosome conditions and may identify features that need follow-up. If screening raises concern, your maternity team may discuss diagnostic testing rather than treating a screening result as a diagnosis.

Ask whether you want chromosome screening, an ultrasound assessment, pregnancy dating, or a diagnostic answer; one test may not provide all of these. Check the timing, what happens if the view is limited, and which results require another scan or specialist appointment.

Share your pregnancy dates, previous scan findings, and family history with the maternity team. If you are considering NIPT instead of an NT scan, ask how the ultrasound information will still be provided. A clinician can explain whether a combined pathway is more appropriate for your pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team promptly after an unexpected scan finding or a higher-chance screening result so the result can be explained and follow-up arranged. Seek urgent pregnancy care for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or fluid loss, whether or not you have had screening.
