What are the alternatives to NIPT?

NIPT analyses small fragments of placental DNA in a blood sample. Other screening approaches combine an ultrasound measurement with pregnancy dating and blood markers. A nuchal translucency scan looks at the fluid behind the baby’s neck and can contribute to an assessment of chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome, while also showing some early pregnancy features.

Amniocentesis is different: a clinician takes a sample of amniotic fluid for chromosome testing. It is a diagnostic procedure rather than a screening estimate, and it involves an invasive needle procedure. Next-generation sequencing is a laboratory technology that may be used for some genetic tests; it is not, by itself, a replacement choice for every pregnancy.

Tell your maternity team how much information you want, when you need it, and whether you would consider diagnostic testing after a screening result. Ask what each test can and cannot assess, when results are expected, and whether an abnormal screening result needs confirmation before decisions are made.

Keep your dating information and scan reports together. Screening results are influenced by gestational age and other factors, so an individual result needs explanation in context. Genetic counselling can help you weigh information, uncertainty, and next steps.

Contact your maternity team promptly if a scan identifies an unexpected finding, if you receive a higher-chance screening result, or if you are unsure which test was offered. Seek urgent pregnancy care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, or fluid loss, regardless of screening plans.
