What are the alternatives to ICSI?

In conventional IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together in the laboratory so fertilisation can occur without injecting a sperm into an egg. ICSI involves selecting a sperm and injecting it into an egg, and may be considered when semen results or earlier fertilisation make it useful. Time-lapse embryo imaging and blastocyst culture are laboratory approaches that may follow fertilisation; they are not substitutes for the fertilisation method itself. Male factor infertility is assessed alongside egg and reproductive factors.

Start with a semen analysis and a review of ovulation, ovarian reserve, previous treatment and pregnancy history. Ask why ICSI was proposed and whether conventional IVF is reasonable. The clinic can explain how many eggs are expected, how fertilisation will be checked, and whether embryo culture or other laboratory decisions fit your circumstances. A plan can change when results are available.

Arrange fertility advice when conception has been delayed or a semen analysis is abnormal. During treatment, contact the clinic promptly for severe abdominal pain, marked swelling, breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding or feeling faint. These symptoms need assessment rather than a change in fertilisation method.
