What are the alternatives to cervical screening test?

An HPV test checks a cervical sample for high-risk types of human papillomavirus. In some programmes, HPV testing is the primary screen; in others, it is used with or after cell examination. It does not replace every part of a screening pathway.

A colposcopy uses a magnifying instrument to examine the cervix after an abnormal result or a concern such as unusual bleeding. A small biopsy may be taken if an area needs closer testing. Cervical ectropion can also cause bleeding and is not the same as cervical cancer.

Ask why screening is being offered and whether an HPV-only approach is available in your local service. The right option depends on your age, previous results, symptoms, pregnancy status, and whether the cervix has already been examined. If HPV is found, follow-up can include cell assessment or colposcopy rather than simply repeating an unsupervised test.

Arrange a clinical review for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, unusual discharge, or pelvic pain, even if you recently had a normal screening result. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, or severe pain. These symptoms have several possible causes and do not by themselves diagnose cervical cancer.

Ask which test is available, what it can and cannot detect, how an abnormal result will be followed up, and whether your symptoms change the plan.
