What are the alternatives to biopsy?

An MRI scan can map the size, position and relationship of a suspicious area to nearby structures. A liquid biopsy looks for tumour-related material in a blood sample and may help track disease or identify treatment signals in selected situations. Genomic tumour profiling can examine genetic features when suitable tumour material is already available. Immunohistochemistry is a laboratory method used to identify proteins in tissue; it is not usually a replacement for obtaining that tissue. A raised PSA or a lung nodule may guide further assessment, but each finding needs interpretation alongside examination and imaging.

The decision depends on whether clinicians need to locate a lesion, estimate its extent, confirm that cancer is present, identify its type, or select treatment. Imaging may be enough for monitoring some known findings, while treatment planning often needs a diagnosis from cells or tissue. Ask which result the proposed test can provide, whether it changes the treatment plan, and what happens if the result is unclear. Do not delay an advised assessment because a blood test seems easier.

Contact your clinical team promptly if a known lump or nodule changes, or if you develop worsening pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, unexplained bleeding, or new neurological symptoms. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, confusion, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether a biopsy is planned.

Ask: What are you trying to learn from a biopsy? Could MRI, liquid biopsy, or another test answer that question? Would avoiding tissue affect cancer classification or treatment selection? If we monitor the finding, when will it be reviewed and what change would prompt sampling?
