What should you know about a Welch Allyn spirometer?

The device connects to a disposable mouthpiece or breathing circuit. You breathe in fully, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and blow out as instructed. The recording can show how much air leaves the lungs and the speed of that flow. These values help a clinician recognise an obstructive or restrictive pattern, assess symptoms such as wheeze or breathlessness, and compare results over time. A result is interpreted with your history, examination, technique, and any other tests; the machine alone does not name a diagnosis.

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the clinic's instructions about meals, smoking, and inhalers before testing. Tell the clinician if you feel unwell, have chest pain, recently had surgery, or become dizzy with forceful breathing. During the test, keep your mouth sealed, follow the prompts, and give a strong, sustained blow when asked. Several attempts may be needed because technique affects the tracing. Do not share a mouthpiece, and mention medicines that may change your breathing result.

Arrange medical assessment for new or worsening breathlessness, persistent cough, wheeze, or reduced ability to exercise. Seek urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or chest pressure. If testing causes marked dizziness, chest discomfort, or breathlessness that does not settle after stopping, tell the staff immediately.

Ask what each reported value represents, whether your effort was adequate, and whether you need repeat testing after treatment. You can also ask how the result fits your symptoms and what follow-up plan is appropriate.
