What should you know about Welch Allyn MacroView Plus?

A clinician can use the view to look for visible changes such as redness, swelling, fluid, discharge, wax or a damaged eardrum. The device supports inspection; it does not diagnose an illness by itself. Findings are considered alongside pain, fever, hearing changes, recent infections and the rest of the examination.

You normally sit still while the clinician gently positions the otoscope at the ear opening. Tell them if the ear is tender, and avoid putting cotton buds or other objects into the canal beforehand. A child may need a parent or carer nearby to help them remain calm. The clinician may examine both ears and explain whether further assessment is needed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe ear pain, sudden hearing loss, blood or pus from the ear, marked swelling around the ear, a high fever, or dizziness with difficulty walking. Seek urgent help for a child who seems very unwell, is unusually drowsy, or has swelling behind the ear.

Ask what was visible in the canal and behind the eardrum, whether wax affected the view, what symptoms fit the examination, and what changes should prompt a follow-up visit.
