What should you know about Welch Allyn Diagnostic Cardiology Suite spirometry?

During spirometry, you breathe through a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer. You take a full breath, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and blow out as hard and as long as instructed. The system records measurements such as the air moved in the first part of the breath and the total amount exhaled. A clinician may repeat the manoeuvre to check that the result is consistent, or compare readings before and after a prescribed inhaler.

The test can contribute to assessment of asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, or a persistent cough. It does not by itself identify every cause of breathlessness, and interpretation depends on your symptoms, examination, age, height, and medical history.

Wear comfortable clothing and avoid a large meal shortly before the appointment. Follow the clinic’s instructions about inhalers; do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician tells you to. Tell the team if you feel unwell, have chest pain, recently had surgery, or find forceful blowing difficult. Sit upright, follow the technician’s demonstration, and pause if you become dizzy.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, new chest pressure, or confusion. Arrange a clinical review for ongoing cough, wheeze, reduced exercise tolerance, or repeated chest infections. A spirometry result should be discussed with the clinician who requested it rather than used to change inhalers on your own.

Ask what each reported breathing measurement means, whether the test quality was adequate, and whether a repeat test or inhaler comparison is needed. You can also ask how smoking, recent infection, or technique may have influenced the reading.
