What should you know about a weird lump on your neck?

A lump may be a temporarily enlarged lymph node after a throat, ear, dental, or skin infection. Other possibilities include a cyst, a salivary-gland problem, a thyroid nodule, or a benign growth. A neck lump is a common presentation of some head and neck cancers, lymphoma, and thyroid cancer; cancer of unknown primary is considered when a malignant lymph node is found but its starting site is not immediately clear. The lump itself does not tell you which explanation applies.

Assessment usually begins with questions and a hands-on examination. The clinician may inspect the mouth and throat, feel the thyroid and lymph-node chains, and check nearby skin. Ultrasound, cross-sectional imaging, or needle sampling may be used when the cause remains uncertain.

Record when the lump appeared and whether it is changing. Notice pain, warmth, redness, firmness, mobility, and whether it moves when you swallow. Mention recent infections, dental problems, skin irritation, travel, medicines, and symptoms such as hoarseness or trouble swallowing. Avoid squeezing it. Book an appointment when it does not settle, keeps growing, or has no clear trigger.

Get urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, grows quickly, or comes with severe illness. Arrange prompt clinical review for a firm or fixed lump, persistent hoarseness, blood in saliva, unexplained weight loss, fever, or pronounced night sweats. These warning features call for examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Ask whether the lump matches a lymph node, thyroid nodule, cyst, or another structure, and what findings would change the next step. Ask whether imaging or a needle sample is appropriate, how results will be explained, and what symptoms should bring you back sooner.
