What should you know about a weird bump on the back of your neck?

Lymph nodes can enlarge while the immune system responds to an infection near the scalp, throat, or upper airways. A skin cyst or fatty lump can sit under the surface, while a firm mass may arise from deeper tissue. A neck lump can also be a presentation of lymphoma, thyroid cancer, head and neck cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, but a lump alone cannot identify its cause.

A clinician may ask when you first noticed it, whether it changes in size, and whether it is tender, mobile, or fixed. They may examine your mouth, throat, skin, thyroid area, and nearby lymph-node regions. Ultrasound or a sample with a needle may be considered when examination does not explain the finding.

Note the bump's location, approximate size, texture, tenderness, and any recent infection, injury, bite, or vaccination. Do not squeeze, repeatedly press, or try to drain it. Arrange a medical assessment if it persists, enlarges, feels hard or fixed, or has no clear explanation. Bring a list of medicines and describe changes such as night sweats, fever, weight loss, voice change, or swallowing difficulty.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, severe difficulty swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, or signs of a serious infection such as marked redness with fever. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent or growing lump, a hard or immobile lump, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, or a change in voice. These features need assessment; they do not by themselves establish cancer.

Ask what structures lie beneath the bump, whether it feels like a lymph node or a skin lesion, and what examination or imaging would clarify it. You can also ask which changes should prompt earlier review and when you should expect follow-up.
