Weeping Intertrigo: What to Know

Intertrigo develops where skin touches skin, such as under the breasts, in the groin, between abdominal folds, or in the armpits. Heat, trapped moisture, and rubbing can weaken the surface, leaving it red, sore, cracked, or raw. Clear fluid may seep from damaged skin; thick discharge, odour, or spreading redness raises concern for infection.

A yeast infection can complicate intertrigo and may produce a bright-red rash with small nearby spots. A clinician may distinguish this from eczema, contact irritation, or bacterial infection by examining the fold and considering how it has changed.

Gently wash the area, pat it completely dry, and choose loose, breathable clothing. Reduce rubbing and change damp clothing promptly. Do not scratch, scrub, or apply multiple medicated products at once, because this can further irritate broken skin.

If yeast is suspected, a clinician may recommend a topical antifungal treatment. Persistent sweating may need a separate plan, such as a prescription antiperspirant, but it should not be applied to raw skin without medical advice. Keep follow-up if the fold is not improving.

Arrange medical assessment for spreading redness, increasing warmth, worsening pain, pus, a bad smell, fever, or recurrent weeping. Seek urgent care if you feel very unwell, redness spreads quickly, or the skin becomes severely painful or discoloured.

Ask whether the fluid looks like inflammation or infection, whether testing is needed, which product is safe on broken skin, and how long to continue it. Mention diabetes, immune conditions, recent antibiotics, and previous episodes.
