Ways to Treat Perioral Dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory rash with small bumps, dryness, burning, or sensitivity around the mouth. It may extend around the nose or eyes. The bumps can resemble pimples, but acne treatment is not automatically appropriate. Previous or ongoing topical corticosteroid use can contribute to the rash or make it harder to recognise.

Keep the routine simple: wash gently with lukewarm water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser, avoid scrubs and fragranced cosmetics, and pause unnecessary heavy creams or occlusive products. Do not start, stop, or restart a steroid around the face without clinical advice; stopping after regular use may need a planned approach. A clinician may prescribe topical antibiotic therapy or another anti-inflammatory treatment. More extensive or persistent disease may call for an oral antibiotic, selected after considering age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Improvement can be gradual, so avoid changing several treatments at once.

Arrange a dermatology or primary-care review when facial bumps persist, spread toward the eyes, or repeatedly return. Seek prompt care for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, marked swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and separate perioral dermatitis from infection, contact irritation, rosacea, or acne.
