Ways to Treat Cradle Cap

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, causes greasy or dry scales on a baby’s scalp. It is not usually caused by poor hygiene and may also appear around the eyebrows, ears, or skin folds. The scales can look stubborn even when the skin underneath is healthy.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby shampoo, then rinse thoroughly. Before washing, a small amount of plain emollient can help soften attached scales. Leave it briefly, massage very gently with fingertips, and use a soft brush to lift only loose flakes. Never pick, scratch, or pull scales away. Stop any product that causes redness, swelling, or discomfort. A clinician may recommend a medicated treatment, such as a topical antifungal, when the appearance or distribution suggests another cause or when simple care has not helped.

Arrange medical advice if the rash spreads beyond the scalp, the skin is broken, or the area becomes very red, swollen, warm, wet, crusted, or painful. Seek prompt assessment if your baby seems unwell, feeds poorly, or has a fever. A clinician can check whether the problem is cradle cap or another infant skin condition and choose a treatment suitable for the baby’s age.
