Ways to soothe a sore throat

Short answer
You can soothe a sore throat with frequent fluids, warm or cool drinks, gentle gargling, and suitable pain relief.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a sore throat can mean
Throat pain often comes from irritation or infection. A common cold, influenza, or COVID-19 may also cause cough, fever, tiredness, or body aches. Allergic rhinitis and acid reflux can irritate the throat without a typical infection. Tonsillitis and strep throat can cause marked pain and difficulty swallowing; glandular fever may bring prolonged fatigue and swollen glands. A sore throat does not by itself show which cause is present.
Ways to feel more comfortable
Sip water regularly and choose warm tea, broth, or cool soft foods according to what feels better. Gargling with warm salt water may ease irritation for adults who can gargle safely; do not swallow it. Rest your voice, avoid smoke, and use a humidifier if indoor air feels dry. Paracetamol or ibuprofen may help some people, but follow the label and ask a pharmacist if you have other conditions, take medicines, are pregnant, or are treating a child. Antibiotics are not useful for every sore throat, so do not start leftover medicine.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have trouble breathing, develop swelling in the mouth or neck, or become unusually drowsy. Arrange medical advice for severe pain, dehydration, a persistent fever, a rash, or symptoms that are not settling. Testing may be considered when the examination suggests a particular infection.
Questions for your doctor
What cause fits my other symptoms? Do I need a throat test? Which pain medicine is suitable for me, and what should I do if swallowing becomes harder?

Questions people ask
Are warm drinks better than cold drinks?
Either can soothe irritation; choose the temperature that feels more comfortable and keep drinking enough fluid.
Should every sore throat be treated with antibiotics?
No. Many sore throats are not caused by bacteria, so a clinician may assess your symptoms before recommending antibiotics.
