What should you know about watery bleeding after sex?

It may be a small amount of blood mixed with vaginal fluid. Friction, dryness, a sensitive cervix, or an infection can cause it. A single light episode may settle, but repeated bleeding should be checked so the cervix and vagina can be examined.

Bleeding after sex is a common presentation of cervical irritation and some infections, including chlamydia. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause can make vaginal tissues thinner and drier, which may lead to bleeding with contact. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can also present with bleeding after sex; this symptom does not establish either diagnosis. Vaginal cancer is uncommon but can also cause unusual bleeding or watery discharge.

The appearance, timing, and amount of bleeding help guide assessment. A clinician may ask about contraception, pregnancy possibility, menopause, pain, discharge, and screening history, then examine the vagina and cervix and offer testing.

Arrange a gynaecology or primary-care appointment if the bleeding returns, continues, or has no clear explanation. Until reviewed, use a pad if needed so you can observe the amount and colour, and avoid anything that worsens pain or bleeding. Do not douche. Testing may include a pregnancy test, swabs for infection, and cervical screening or examination when appropriate. If a cervical abnormality needs further assessment, a cone biopsy is one possible procedure; a specialist will explain whether it applies to you.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. Prompt assessment is also sensible when bleeding follows sex with new pelvic pain or an unusual-smelling discharge, because infection may need treatment.
