How do water pills help blood pressure?

Diuretics act on the kidneys to increase urine production. This can reduce extra fluid in the circulation and, over time, lower pressure within blood vessels. They may be prescribed for hypertension or for fluid build-up linked with heart failure. The choice depends on kidney function, other medicines, blood tests, and conditions such as obesity or obstructive sleep apnoea that may affect blood pressure. They are not a substitute for checking the underlying cause or for taking other prescribed treatment.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and plan access to a toilet, especially after a dose. Do not double a missed dose or stop treatment without advice. Your clinician may monitor blood pressure, kidney function, and body salts; keep those checks. Report troublesome cramps, severe thirst, weakness, confusion, faintness, palpitations, or a major change in urination. Ask before using anti-inflammatory pain medicines, supplements, or salt substitutes because they can alter kidney function or body salts.

Get urgent help for fainting, severe weakness or confusion, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or new one-sided weakness or speech trouble. Seek prompt advice for very low readings with dizziness, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, or very little urine. Do not assume a new headache or neurological symptom is a medicine effect; stroke and transient ischaemic attack symptoms require emergency assessment.
