Water burn marks on skin: what to know

Hot water can injure the skin, while soaps, disinfectants, or repeated washing may cause irritation. Burning, redness, scaling, or itch can also occur with [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/). Facial flushing and stinging may fit [Rosacea](/conditions/rosacea/), and a one-sided painful rash with blisters can fit [Shingles](/conditions/shingles/). A mark is a presentation of several possible problems, not proof of one condition.

Move away from the suspected heat or product. For a fresh heat injury, cool the area with clean running water and remove tight jewellery or clothing if it is not stuck to the skin. Do not use ice, butter, or harsh creams, and do not break blisters. For ongoing stinging, use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, avoid rubbing, and pause products that burn on contact. Keep the area covered if the surface is open.

Get urgent help for a large or deep-looking burn, white or charred skin, severe pain or numbness, burns involving the face, hands, genitals, major joints, or an electrical or chemical exposure. Seek review if redness spreads, drainage develops, fever appears, or the mark is not improving. Ask whether the mark is a burn, irritation, or another rash; what products to stop; how to dress any open skin; and whether sun protection or follow-up is needed. Describe the water temperature, contact time, products used, and when the mark appeared.
