Short answer

If your waters break at 36 weeks, contact your maternity team immediately because you are not yet at full term, even if contractions are absent.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pregnancy stage
36 weeks is before full term, so suspected rupture needs immediate advice.
Bring
Pregnancy notes and a list of current medicines, if attending.

Why 36 weeks needs review

At 36 weeks, a gush or ongoing trickle may be amniotic fluid, urine or discharge, and an assessment can distinguish them. The maternity team may check your temperature, symptoms, the baby’s heartbeat and the fluid. They will consider infection risk, your health and the baby’s condition when discussing next steps. Contractions may start after the waters break, but their absence does not make the leak unimportant. Leakage at this stage can be part of preterm labour.

Prepare for assessment

Put on a clean maternity pad and record the time, colour, amount and smell of the fluid. Call your maternity unit or obstetric team immediately and follow their advice about attending. Avoid tampons, sex, swimming and anything inserted into the vagina. Take your pregnancy notes and medicines list if you go in. Continue observing baby movements, and tell the team if they change.

Urgent symptoms at 36 weeks

Go urgently for green or brown fluid, fresh bleeding, fever, severe abdominal pain, regular contractions, reduced baby movements or feeling faint or unwell. Do not wait for labour pain to report suspected rupture. The [Preterm Labour](/conditions/preterm-labour/) page covers the related concern. Use emergency services if you are too unwell to travel safely.

Questions about the plan

Ask how rupture will be confirmed, whether you need observation, and what options fit your health and the baby’s assessment. Ask about infection warning signs, movement checks, bathing and activity, and exactly when to return or call again.
