What should you know about warts on lips treatment?

A wart may be a small, firm or rough growth on the lip edge or nearby skin. The lip is delicate and constantly exposed to moisture, movement and friction, so a bump can become irritated easily. A wart is not the only explanation: a cold sore, blocked gland, inflamed area or another lesion may have a different treatment. Do not assume a lip bump is a wart from its appearance alone.

Do not use over-the-counter wart acids, household chemicals, freezing products or sharp tools on the lip unless a qualified clinician specifically directs you. Avoid biting, peeling or shaving the area, and wash hands after contact. A clinician may consider a carefully selected procedure such as cryotherapy, electrosurgery or wart removal; prescribed treatment may also be discussed when appropriate. Keep follow-up appointments so healing and the diagnosis can be checked.

Arrange an appointment if the lesion lasts, returns, bleeds, forms an ulcer, becomes increasingly tender or changes in colour or shape. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, fever, trouble eating or difficulty breathing. A new or changing lesion on the lip deserves examination even when it is not painful, particularly if you cannot distinguish it from a sore or wart.

Ask what the lesion most closely resembles, whether the lip surface or mouth lining is involved, and which treatment protects healthy tissue. Ask how long healing may take, whether you should avoid kissing or shared lip products, and which changes require review.
