Wart-like bumps on skin: what to know

A rough bump may be a wart, but smooth or pearly bumps can point toward other conditions. Folliculitis often centres on a hair follicle and may be tender or pimple-like. Keratosis pilaris commonly creates many small rough bumps, while milia are firm, pale cysts. Heat rash can cause clusters of tiny itchy bumps, and lichen planus may produce grouped, itchy, flat-topped bumps. Location, recent shaving, sweating, new products, and whether the bump changes all matter. A photograph can support an appointment, but a clinician may need to examine the surface closely.

Do not cut, squeeze, burn, or repeatedly file an unidentified bump. Keep the area clean, avoid picking, and pause products that sting or inflame it. Note when the bumps appeared, whether they spread, and any itch, pain, bleeding, or discharge. Do not share towels, razors, or nail tools until the cause is clear. Treatment depends on the diagnosis: a clinician might discuss cryotherapy for a confirmed wart, while irritation or follicle-related bumps need different care.

Arrange a dermatology review for a bump that grows, changes colour, bleeds without being rubbed, becomes painful, or fails to settle. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, pus, fever, or swelling around the eye. A sudden widespread rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty needs emergency help.

Ask what features distinguish a wart from folliculitis, milia, keratosis pilaris, heat rash, or lichen planus. Ask whether treatment is needed, what home care is safe, and whether the bump should be tested or reviewed if it changes.
