Walking dandruff in humans: what to know

Walking dandruff commonly describes mites that cause loose, moving scale on animals. Seeing flakes move, or noticing an itchy scalp after contact with a pet, does not by itself prove that humans have the same infestation. Human flaking can result from dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, which often affects oily areas and may cause white or yellow scale with itch. Dryness, psoriasis, contact irritation, fungal infection, and other conditions can look similar.

Look for scalp redness, greasy scale, crusting, broken hairs, sores, or hair loss. Ask whether anyone else at home is itchy and whether a pet has been examined, but avoid applying animal products to human skin.

Wash gently and avoid scratching, picking, harsh fragrances, and sharing combs, hats, or brushes until the cause is clearer. A clinician may recommend medicated shampoo treatment for dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, or topical antifungal treatment when a fungal process is suspected. Follow the product directions and keep treatment away from the eyes. Arrange veterinary care for an affected pet; do not use veterinary medication on yourself.

Seek medical assessment for painful inflammation, pus, thick crusts, fever, swollen glands, patchy hair loss, broken hairs, or a rash spreading beyond the scalp. Arrange review when flaking persists despite appropriate shampoo use or when sleep is disturbed by itching. Urgent help is needed for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction.

Ask whether the pattern fits dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infection, contact irritation, or another condition; whether a scalp examination or testing is needed; and how often to use treatment. Mention pet exposure, new hair products, hair loss, and symptoms affecting household contacts.
