Walk-in flu shot: what to know

A flu vaccination prepares the immune system to recognise influenza. The product used may be an [Inactivated Vaccine](/materials/inactivated-vaccine/), which cannot cause influenza infection. Protection develops over time, so vaccination does not treat an illness that is already causing symptoms.

The clinician will usually check your age, health conditions, current illness, allergies, previous vaccine reactions, and any medicines that affect the decision. Tell them if you have had a serious reaction to a previous dose or an ingredient.

Check the clinic’s opening arrangements and bring relevant medical information. Wear clothing that allows the upper arm to be reached easily. Eat and drink normally unless you have been given different instructions, and tell the vaccinator if you feel unwell on arrival.

After vaccination, remain where staff can observe you for the period they advise. A sore arm, mild fever, tiredness, or headache can occur for a short time. Rest, drink fluids, and use a suitable medicine only if a pharmacist or clinician confirms it is appropriate for you.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse, or severe dizziness soon after vaccination. Contact a clinician if symptoms are severe, worsening, or do not settle, or if you develop signs of a separate infection.
