Waist pain during ovulation: what should you know?

Ovulation pain, sometimes called mittelschmerz, may feel like an ache or sharper twinge on one side of the lower abdomen. It can occur as an ovary releases an egg and may be felt toward the waist or back. The timing alone cannot confirm ovulation or exclude another cause. Note the cycle day, side, intensity, duration, and accompanying symptoms. Rest, gentle movement, warmth, and hydration may ease mild pain. Take medicine only if it is appropriate for your health and pregnancy plans; ask a pharmacist or clinician when unsure. A review is sensible when the pain is new, returns across cycles, lasts longer than expected, or affects work, sleep, sex, or movement.

Get urgent help for sudden intense pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever, persistent vomiting, or marked abdominal swelling. Seek prompt assessment for pain with a positive pregnancy test, because ectopic pregnancy can cause dangerous pelvic pain and bleeding. Arrange routine care if symptoms are becoming more frequent, more intense, or different from your usual pattern.
