Vulvodynia treatment over the counter: what to consider

Vulval pain may arise from vulvodynia, infection, dermatitis or another problem, and each needs different care. Fragrance, antiseptics, numbing ingredients and preservatives can irritate already sensitive tissue. A product that feels cooling or soothing at first may still trigger burning later. Non-prescription pain medicine may be unsuitable with certain health conditions or other medicines, so a pharmacist can check before use.

Start with low-irritation care: rinse with water, pat dry, avoid scented products and reduce rubbing from tight clothing. Read the label and do not apply a product inside the vagina unless it is specifically intended for that use. Do not combine several creams or keep using one that causes burning, rash or swelling. Tell the pharmacist about pregnancy, allergies, regular medicines and skin conditions. If pain is provoked by touch or sex, pelvic floor physiotherapy or guided vaginal dilator therapy may address contributing muscle tension more directly than a cream.

Seek medical review when pain lasts, returns or interferes with sitting, sleep, sex or urination. Arrange prompt assessment for discharge, sores, blisters, bleeding, a new lump, fever or a visible skin change. Get urgent help for rapidly worsening pain or swelling, fever with severe illness, or inability to pass urine.
