What should you know about vulvar itching and redness?

Red, itchy vulvar skin is reacting to something, but the cause may be external irritation, a skin disorder, or infection. Friction, sweat, hair removal, pads, and fragranced products can inflame the surface. The pattern, texture, discharge, and duration help a clinician decide whether testing or treatment is needed.

Contact Dermatitis may follow a new cleanser, detergent, pad, or topical medicine. Atopic Dermatitis and Asteatotic Eczema can produce dry, cracked, itchy skin. Skin Yeast Infection may cause moist soreness. Lichen Planus can cause fragile or raw-looking areas, and Psoriasis may form well-defined red patches. Scabies can itch intensely, sometimes with symptoms in household members. Hives tend to appear as raised areas that shift or fade. These clues guide assessment but do not replace it.

Pause fragranced products, wipes, sprays, and unnecessary creams. Clean gently with lukewarm water, pat rather than rub, and change out of damp clothing. Choose loose underwear and avoid scratching or shaving the affected skin. Keep a note of new exposures, cycle timing, discharge, and whether symptoms follow sex or exercise. Avoid borrowing or repeating prescription creams without a diagnosis.

Arrange prompt care for rapidly worsening redness, swelling, open sores, blisters, bleeding, fever, severe pain, unusual discharge, or burning with urination. A persistent patch, skin thickening, loss of normal skin texture, or symptoms that repeatedly return also warrants examination.
