Short answer

Vulva itching in the third trimester may come from irritation, thrush, a skin condition, or a pregnancy-related disorder, so new or persistent symptoms deserve maternity assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations

Pregnancy can increase warmth, moisture, friction, and sensitivity around the vulva. Scented washes, liners, laundry products, shaving, or tight clothing may irritate the skin. Itching with soreness or discharge can be associated with [Skin Yeast Infection](/conditions/cutaneous-candidiasis/), while eczema or irritation can resemble [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) or [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/). Other skin conditions, including [Lichen Planus](/conditions/lichen-planus/) and [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/), can affect genital skin.

Itching alone does not identify one diagnosis. Itching that is widespread, especially on the palms or soles, or worse at night without a typical rash should be reported promptly because pregnancy-related liver problems need specific assessment. A clinician may ask about discharge, urine symptoms, rash elsewhere, sleep disruption, and fetal movement.

Comfort measures and assessment

Wash gently with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free product recommended for sensitive skin, then pat dry. Choose loose cotton underwear, change out of damp clothes, and avoid douching, scented wipes, deodorants, and scratching. Do not use leftover antifungal, steroid, or herbal products without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy. Contact your midwife, obstetric team, or doctor for new, persistent, severe, or recurrent itching so the cause can be checked and treatment chosen safely.

When to contact maternity care urgently

Seek urgent advice for severe or rapidly spreading itch, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, significant abdominal pain, bleeding, fluid leakage, fever, painful blisters, or reduced fetal movement. Emergency help is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, collapse, or severe illness. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these symptoms appear.

Questions to ask

Ask whether you need an examination or swab, which treatments are safe at your stage of pregnancy, and whether itching elsewhere changes the assessment. Mention discharge, smell, pain when passing urine, night-time symptoms, and any new products. You can also ask how to monitor fetal movement and which changes should prompt an immediate call.
