Vomiting yellow fluid and blood

Yellow vomit is often bile, a digestive fluid that can appear after repeated vomiting has emptied the stomach. Blood may be bright red, dark, or brown and may come from irritation caused by retching, an ulcer, inflammation, or another source in the upper digestive tract. Yellow colour does not cancel the significance of blood, and the appearance cannot show how much bleeding has occurred.

Food Poisoning and Gastroenteritis can lead to repeated vomiting and dehydration, while Gallstones or Pancreatitis can cause upper abdominal pain and vomiting. These conditions do not explain blood without an examination, especially when symptoms are severe or new.

Contact emergency services or go to an emergency department immediately. Sit upright, or turn onto your side if you may vomit again. Do not drive if weak, dizzy, or faint. Avoid food, alcohol, aspirin, and anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician instructs you otherwise. Keep a record of the colour, clots, and timing, and bring details of medicines, including blood thinners. Do not delay care to collect a sample.

Get emergency help for repeated blood-stained vomit, clots, black stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, pale or clammy skin, fast heartbeat, trouble breathing, or inability to keep fluids down. Very little urine and marked weakness suggest dehydration. Even a single episode deserves prompt assessment because the bleeding may stop temporarily and return.

Ask whether the yellow material is bile, where the blood may have originated, and whether you need blood tests or an endoscopic examination. Tell the clinician about retching, pain location, bowel colour, fever, alcohol use, previous ulcers, liver disease, pregnancy, and all medicines and supplements.
