What should you know about vomiting out blood?

Blood may look bright red, dark brown, or like coffee grounds. It can arise from bleeding in the throat, food pipe, stomach, or the first part of the small intestine. Forceful or repeated vomiting can irritate or tear the lining, while ulcers, inflammation, or medicines that affect clotting can also be involved.

The appearance and amount do not reliably show how serious the bleeding is. Vomiting itself may occur with food poisoning, gastroenteritis, or another illness, but blood changes the urgency. A clinician may ask about pain, black stools, alcohol use, liver disease, and recent medicines before deciding which tests are needed.

Stop eating until you have received medical advice, and avoid alcohol, aspirin, and anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician has specifically told you to use them. Do not drive if you feel faint. Note the colour and approximate amount, keep any medication list nearby, and ask someone to stay with you.

If the bleeding has stopped, contact an urgent medical service now rather than waiting for a routine appointment. Small sips may be reasonable only if you are fully alert and not actively vomiting; do not force fluids when retching continues.

Call emergency services immediately for ongoing or heavy bleeding, fainting, confusion, cold or clammy skin, rapid breathing, severe abdominal or chest pain, or trouble staying awake. Black, tar-like stools can also signal bleeding and require urgent care.

Even a single episode needs same-day assessment because bleeding can recur or cause dehydration and low blood volume. Bring the names and doses of medicines you take, including blood thinners and supplements.

Ask where the blood may have come from, whether you need blood tests or an examination of the upper digestive tract, which medicines to pause, and what warning signs should send you back to emergency care.
