Vomiting without a fever: what to know

Short answer
Vomiting without a fever can still cause dehydration and may have several causes, so assess the pattern and warning signs carefully.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Fever
- Its absence does not explain the vomiting
- Fluids
- Small frequent sips are easier to tolerate
- Track
- Urine, pain, timing, food, and medicines
What may be behind it
A fever is not required for vomiting. Triggers include motion sickness, migraine, reflux, stomach irritation, medication effects, pregnancy, food poisoning, and gallbladder or pancreatic problems. Some infections begin without fever or never cause one. The timing with meals, movement, headache, pain, diarrhoea, new medicines, or possible pregnancy gives more useful clues than temperature alone.
Self-care while it settles
Rest and take small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration fluid. Once you can keep liquids down, try light foods gradually and avoid alcohol, greasy meals, and strong smells. Do not take an anti-vomiting medicine borrowed from someone else. Track urine, pain, bowel symptoms, medicines, and how often vomiting occurs so a clinician can identify a pattern.
When to get medical help
Seek urgent care for blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, severe or localised abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, severe headache with a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical advice when vomiting keeps returning, follows a head injury, or comes with very little urine, marked weakness, or yellow skin or eyes.
Useful questions
Ask which causes fit your symptom pattern and whether you need tests or a prescription. Tell the clinician about recent travel, food exposures, pregnancy possibility, headaches, pain location, bowel changes, and any new or changed medicines.
