Vomiting mucus with blood: what it may mean

Mucus can mix with blood when the throat or upper digestive lining is irritated by repeated coughing, gagging, or forceful vomiting. Blood may also be swallowed from a nosebleed or mouth injury. A stomach ulcer, inflammation, or infection can bleed independently of retching. Bright streaks are different from a large volume, dark blood, or material resembling coffee grounds; appearance alone cannot confirm the source.

Stop strenuous activity and avoid alcohol, aspirin, and anti-inflammatory painkillers until a clinician advises you. Take small sips only if you are alert and not actively vomiting. Note whether the blood is fresh or dark, how often it appears, and whether coughing or nosebleeding came first. Arrange prompt medical advice if it returns, increases, or occurs with upper abdominal discomfort.

Go to emergency care for a large amount of blood, continuous vomiting, faintness, confusion, pale clammy skin, rapid breathing, severe pain, black stools, or difficulty staying awake. Do not drive if dizzy. Blood-thinning treatment, known ulcers, liver disease, or pregnancy lowers the threshold for urgent assessment.

Explain whether the blood appeared after retching, coughing, or a nosebleed, and mention abdominal pain, dark stools, alcohol use, ulcers, and all medicines or supplements. Ask whether you need an examination, blood tests, or a camera test of the upper digestive tract.
