Vomiting and diarrhea with COVID

COVID can affect the digestive system as well as the airways. Nausea, vomiting or loose stools may occur with respiratory symptoms, or digestive symptoms may be more noticeable. These symptoms do not identify the cause by themselves. Food Poisoning and Gastroenteritis are other possibilities, while Rotavirus Infection is another infectious cause. Severe upper-abdominal pain can point to a different problem such as Pancreatitis or Gallstones.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting settles, try plain foods in small portions and return gradually to your usual diet. Rest, wash your hands carefully and avoid preparing food for other people while you are unwell. Keep track of how often you vomit or pass stool, whether you can urinate normally, and any new breathing symptoms. Follow local advice about testing and reducing contact if COVID is possible.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical advice if vomiting or diarrhea continues, urine becomes very dark or much less frequent, or you have a condition or treatment that raises your risk from dehydration. A stiff neck with severe headache needs urgent assessment because Meningitis can be serious.
