Short answer

Vomiting and chills without fever may reflect an early stomach illness, food-related irritation, dehydration, migraine, or another condition, so monitor symptoms and hydration closely.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main concern
Fluid loss from repeated vomiting
Useful check
Record temperature, fluid intake, urine, and pain
Urgent sign
Confusion, severe pain, stiff neck, or bloody vomit

What it may mean

Chills can be a sensation of cold or shivering even when a thermometer does not show a fever. Vomiting can cause fluid loss, which may leave you weak, light-headed, or clammy. A stomach infection such as Gastroenteritis or Food Poisoning may begin before fever appears, while Migraine can cause nausea and vomiting with marked sensitivity to light or sound.

Pain changes the picture. Severe or persistent upper abdominal pain can occur with Gallstones or Pancreatitis. A severe headache with a stiff neck, confusion, a rash, or unusual drowsiness needs urgent assessment because Meningitis can present with serious neurological symptoms. These symptoms do not identify a diagnosis by themselves.

What to do now

Rest somewhere comfortable and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting follows each attempt to drink, pause briefly and restart with smaller sips. Once fluids stay down, try bland foods such as toast, rice, bananas, or soup; avoid alcohol and heavy meals until you feel steadier.

Check your temperature again later and note when vomiting began, what you have eaten, any new medicines, abdominal pain, urine changes, and whether anyone else is unwell. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others if a stomach infection is possible. Read more about Vomiting for general symptom guidance.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, trouble breathing, a stiff neck, a sudden severe headache, severe abdominal pain, or vomit containing blood or material that looks like coffee grounds. Get prompt advice if you cannot keep fluids down, urinate much less than usual, or symptoms are worsening.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what might explain the chills, how to replace fluids safely, whether any medicine could be contributing, and which symptoms should trigger same-day review. Tell the clinician about recent travel, shared meals, pregnancy possibility, medical conditions, and every medicine or supplement you take.

Questions people ask

Can chills happen without a fever?

Yes. Shivering may result from fluid loss, the body’s stress response, or an illness that has not caused a measurable fever.

What should I drink after vomiting?

Try small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, increasing gradually if it stays down.
