What should you know about vomiting a little bit of blood?

Bright red streaks may come from tiny tears caused by repeated or forceful vomiting. Dark brown material that resembles coffee grounds can indicate blood that has remained in the stomach. Swallowed blood from a nosebleed or bleeding gums can also appear in vomit. Stomach irritation, an ulcer, infection, or medicines that irritate the stomach are other possibilities; the appearance alone cannot identify the source.

Stop eating solid food briefly while arranging medical advice, and take only small sips of water if you are fully awake and able to swallow. Do not drink alcohol or take anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a clinician has told you to. Note the colour and approximate amount, whether retching came first, and any medicines you use. A clinician may need to check your circulation, blood count, and digestive tract.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department if bleeding continues or increases, the vomit is dark and grainy, or you feel faint, confused, unusually weak, clammy, or short of breath. Severe stomach pain, black stools, a fast heartbeat, or inability to keep fluids down also require urgent help. Even a small episode warrants same-day medical advice, especially if you take blood thinners or have known stomach disease.

Ask what may have caused the bleeding, whether your medicines should be changed, and which symptoms mean you should return immediately. Ask whether you need blood tests, treatment for stomach irritation, or further examination if vomiting returns.
