What should you know about VMS menopause?

Short answer
Vasomotor symptoms are menopause-related hot flushes and night sweats caused by changes in temperature regulation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What VMS can feel like
A hot flush may begin suddenly with warmth in the face, neck or chest, followed by sweating and sometimes chills. Night sweats are episodes that disturb sleep. These symptoms often occur around changing periods, but their timing and intensity vary. Menopause can also involve vaginal dryness, mood changes or lower sexual desire, although those symptoms have other possible causes too.
VMS describes symptoms rather than a separate disease. A clinician can consider your age, menstrual pattern, medicines and other health conditions when deciding whether the symptoms fit menopause or need another explanation.
Ways to manage symptoms
Keep the bedroom cool, choose breathable layers, and notice triggers such as warm rooms, alcohol, spicy food or emotional stress. A symptom diary can show patterns and help you discuss sleep disruption or daytime interference with a clinician.
Treatment choices may include menopausal hormone therapy or non-hormonal options, depending on your health history and preferences. Ask about benefits, risks and alternatives, especially if you have a history of blood clots, breast cancer, liver disease or unexplained bleeding.
When to get medical advice
Arrange medical advice for new or disruptive flushes, symptoms that begin before the expected menopausal transition, or sweating with fever, unexplained weight loss, chest symptoms or palpitations. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or sudden neurological symptoms.
