Can vitamin D cure acid reflux?

Short answer
Vitamin D is not an established cure for acid reflux, so improvement while taking it does not prove that it treated the underlying reflux.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why symptoms can improve
Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upwards into the oesophagus, causing symptoms such as burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, regurgitation or cough. Symptoms may fluctuate with meal timing, portion size, alcohol, smoking, stress, sleep position and weight changes. Starting vitamin D at the same time as another change can make the cause of improvement difficult to identify.
Reflux can be associated with a hiatus hernia or obesity, but these links do not diagnose the condition in one person. A cough or chest tightness may have causes unrelated to reflux, so the symptom pattern matters.
What you can try
Keep a brief record of meals, symptoms, medicines and bedtime. Avoid lying down soon after eating, identify foods that clearly trigger symptoms and consider raising the head of the bed if night reflux is troublesome. Use antacids or other treatment only as directed by a pharmacist or clinician. Do not rely on vitamin D to control recurring reflux or change a prescribed supplement without advice.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, breathlessness, sweating, faintness, vomiting blood or black stools. Arrange a prompt review for food sticking, painful swallowing, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss or reflux that keeps returning. Ongoing symptoms may need assessment for acid reflux and other causes, including chronic cough.
Questions for an appointment
Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, whether any medicine or supplement could be contributing, and which treatment duration is suitable. Mention night symptoms, swallowing difficulty, chest symptoms, weight changes and what improved when you started vitamin D.

Questions people ask
If reflux improved after vitamin D, should I continue it?
Discuss whether vitamin D is needed for your health and follow the prescribed or labelled directions; improvement alone does not prove it treated reflux.
Can reflux cause a cough?
Reflux can be associated with cough, but persistent cough also has other possible causes and may need assessment.
