Vitamin D analogue for psoriasis: what should you know?

Calcipotriol and where it is used in the body

Short answer

Vitamin D analogues such as calcipotriol can slow overactive skin-cell growth in psoriasis, but they must be used in the prescribed amount and areas.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Example
Calcipotriol is a topical vitamin D analogue.
Main action
It helps regulate excessive skin-cell growth and inflammation in plaques.
Use
Apply only as prescribed, especially around the face and skin folds.

How vitamin D analogues work

Psoriasis involves rapid skin-cell turnover and inflammation. A topical vitamin D analogue acts on skin-cell growth and inflammatory signalling, helping plaques become less thick and scaly over time. Calcipotriol is one example. It is usually applied to affected skin, and a clinician may pair it with another topical medicine when that suits the person and body area. It is not the same as taking an ordinary vitamin D supplement, and supplements should not be used as a substitute for prescribed psoriasis care.

Using treatment safely

Apply a thin layer only to the areas and schedule provided by your prescriber. Wash your hands afterwards unless your hands are being treated, and keep the product away from the eyes, face, and folds unless specifically instructed. Do not cover treated plaques with an occlusive dressing without advice. Mild irritation can occur, especially on sensitive skin. Tell your clinician about other psoriasis products, calcium or vitamin D supplements, kidney problems, or extensive treatment areas so the regimen can be adjusted safely.

When to seek care

Contact your prescriber if burning, redness, peeling, or worsening plaques make treatment difficult, or if there is no meaningful improvement after the planned trial. Seek prompt advice for widespread irritation or suspected infection. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe widespread rash. Sudden extensive redness, pus-filled bumps, fever, or feeling acutely unwell needs urgent dermatology assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Is calcipotriol suitable for my psoriasis type and treatment area? How much should I apply, and for how long? Can I combine it with a steroid or other treatment? Which irritation is expected, and which symptom means I should stop and call? Do I need a review of my supplements or other medicines?

Questions people ask

Is calcipotriol the same as a vitamin D supplement?

No. Calcipotriol is a prescription skin treatment designed to act on psoriasis plaques; it is not an ordinary dietary supplement.

Can I use it on my face?

Only if your prescriber specifically advises it, because facial skin can be more sensitive and some formulations are not intended for that area.
