Viral laryngitis

The larynx contains the vocal cords. During a viral infection they become swollen, so they cannot vibrate normally. This produces a rough, weak or absent voice, with cough, sore throat and a need to clear the throat. A common cold may be the trigger, although irritation from smoking, voice overuse or acid reflux can cause similar symptoms.

Hoarseness often changes during the day and may persist after other cold symptoms improve. Antibiotics do not treat a viral cause. Persistent voice change should not be assumed to be laryngitis without an examination.

Drink regularly, rest your voice and speak softly when necessary. Avoid shouting and whispering, because both can strain swollen vocal cords. Humid air may feel soothing, while smoke, vaping, alcohol and throat-clearing can add irritation. Choose easy-to-swallow foods if the throat is sore.

A pharmacist can discuss suitable pain relief based on your health and medicines. Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are troublesome, keep returning or last longer than expected; reflux symptoms, allergies or another vocal-cord problem may need attention.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat swelling, blue lips or severe dehydration. These signs can threaten the airway or indicate a more serious illness.

Arrange medical review for coughing blood, severe pain, a neck lump, unexplained weight loss, repeated episodes or hoarseness that persists. People who smoke or use their voice professionally should mention this during assessment.
