Viral labyrinthitis: what patients should know

How the structures involved in Labyrinthitis differ from normal

Short answer

Viral labyrinthitis can cause sudden spinning, nausea and imbalance; symptoms usually ease gradually, but persistent or severe features need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical symptoms
Vertigo, nausea, dizziness and imbalance
Immediate safety
Sit down and avoid driving during attacks
Assessment trigger
New hearing loss or neurological symptoms

What is happening

The labyrinth is part of the inner ear and helps the brain understand movement and position. Inflammation can disrupt those signals, leading to vertigo, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and difficulty walking. Some people also notice ringing in the ears or a change in hearing.

Symptoms may follow a viral upper-respiratory illness, but a cold does not prove that labyrinthitis is the cause. Other balance disorders and neurological problems can look similar. A clinician will consider how symptoms began, whether hearing changed, and what you can do safely.

Practical steps

Sit or lie down when spinning starts, rise slowly and use support when walking. Keep the home free of trip hazards, avoid driving and do not work at height while balance is affected. Take small sips of fluid if nausea is present and choose light food as tolerated.

When the worst symptoms ease, gradually resume ordinary movement rather than remaining in bed. A GP consultation can assess your ears and nervous system, review medicines and advise whether symptom relief or balance exercises are appropriate. Do not borrow prescription medicines from someone else.

When to seek help

Call emergency services for sudden trouble speaking, facial drooping, one-sided weakness or numbness, a severe new headache, fainting, chest pain or an inability to stand safely. These symptoms need urgent assessment because they are not explained by simple inner-ear irritation alone.

Seek prompt medical advice for new hearing loss, severe ear pain, ongoing vomiting, dehydration, worsening vertigo or symptoms that are not gradually improving. Arrange review before returning to driving, cycling or safety-sensitive work.

Questions for your doctor

Could another balance or neurological condition explain this? Do I need a hearing check? What activities should I avoid, and when should I start balance exercises?

Questions people ask

Is viral labyrinthitis the same as ordinary dizziness?

No. Labyrinthitis involves inner-ear inflammation and can cause spinning vertigo, nausea and balance difficulty; dizziness has many causes.

Can I exercise with labyrinthitis?

Resume gentle movement gradually when safe, but avoid driving, heights and hazardous activities while balance is unreliable.
