What should you know about viral cough?

The cough may be dry or bring up a small amount of mucus. A sore throat, blocked or runny nose, hoarse voice, tiredness and fever can occur alongside it. Coughing helps move mucus and irritants out of the airways, so suppressing every cough is not always useful. A cough can linger after other cold symptoms have eased because airway lining remains sensitive.

A cough can also occur with conditions such as Common Cold, Acute Bronchitis, Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma or Acid Reflux. A symptom alone cannot identify its cause. Bronchiectasis, Bronchiolitis and Chronic Cough need separate assessment when the pattern, age or duration makes them relevant.

Rest when you need it, drink fluids regularly and avoid smoke, vaping aerosol and strongly scented products. Warm drinks can soothe an irritated throat; honey may help adults and children over one year, but it is not suitable for infants. Saline nasal drops or spray may reduce post-nasal drainage. Ask a pharmacist to check any cough or cold medicine against your age, pregnancy status, long-term conditions and other medicines. Antibiotics do not treat viruses unless a clinician finds a separate bacterial problem.

Seek urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, chest pain, coughing blood or a child who is struggling to breathe. Arrange prompt medical assessment if fever is persistent or returning, breathing becomes wheezy, you cannot keep fluids down, or the cough is worsening rather than easing. A cough that continues beyond the expected recovery period, repeatedly disrupts sleep, or occurs in someone with lung disease also deserves review.

Ask what pattern suggests a viral infection, whether your breathing and chest need examination, which medicines are appropriate for you, and what change should prompt a follow-up visit. Mention the start of the cough, mucus colour and amount, fever, breathlessness, exposures and any asthma or other lung condition.
