Vicks VapoRub for cracked heels: what to know

Heel fissures develop when dry, thickened skin loses flexibility and splits under pressure. Open cracks can hurt when you stand or walk and may bleed. Fragrance, menthol, or camphor in a product can irritate already-open skin, so stop if burning, redness, or swelling develops. Vicks VapoRub does not repair the underlying loss of moisture or explain why the skin is cracking.

Dry skin, prolonged standing, open-backed footwear, and some skin conditions can contribute. Scaling between the toes or on the sole may point toward athlete's foot rather than simple dryness.

After a short warm wash, pat the feet dry and apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Covering the heels with cotton socks can reduce friction overnight. Wear supportive, closed-back footwear and avoid cutting thick skin with blades. Emollient therapy can help restore the skin barrier; use a product recommended by a pharmacist or clinician when cracks are deep or recurrent.

Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or fever. A deep crack that will not close, repeated bleeding, or difficulty walking also deserves assessment. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced foot sensation, do not self-treat an open fissure without professional advice.

Ask which moisturiser is best for your skin, whether a fungal rash is contributing, and how to protect the fissure while it heals. Ask whether your footwear, eczema, or another condition may be driving repeated cracking.
