Vicks for sunburn: what to know

Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction caused by ultraviolet exposure. Redness, warmth, tenderness and later peeling are typical; more severe injury can produce Skin Blisters. Vicks contains aromatic ingredients that may sting or irritate damaged skin, while a heavy layer can hold heat against the surface. It does not reverse the injury.

Sunburned skin is more vulnerable to friction and further ultraviolet exposure. Repeated burns contribute to Sun-Damaged Skin over time, so protect the area while it heals.

Move out of the sun, cool the skin with a comfortable shower or clean cool compress, drink fluids, and wear loose clothing. Apply a bland moisturiser or Emollient Therapy product when the skin is intact; avoid fragranced products on tender or peeling areas. Do not break blisters or pull peeling skin. A clinician can advise whether Topical Corticosteroids are suitable for a particular inflammatory reaction.

Seek medical help for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, fever, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, dehydration, or signs of infection such as pus and spreading redness. Extra care is needed for burns involving the face, eyes, hands or genitals, and for young children. Stay out of direct sun until the skin has recovered.
