Very light bleeding after sex: what to know

A small amount of blood may come from a minor vaginal or cervical surface injury, especially when there is dryness or vigorous friction. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause can make vaginal tissues thinner and more sensitive. Chlamydia and other infections may cause bleeding alongside discharge, pelvic pain, burning when passing urine, or pain during sex.

Bleeding after sex is a presentation of cervical dysplasia and, less commonly, cervical or vaginal cancer. That does not mean cancer is the cause in your case, but ongoing, recurrent, or postmenopausal bleeding deserves an examination.

Arrange an appointment if bleeding happens again, occurs without clear friction, follows sex with pain, or continues after menopause. Record when it happened, the amount and colour, pain, discharge, contraception, and whether cervical screening is up to date. A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix, offer infection testing, and arrange further tests if the appearance or history calls for them.

Until assessed, pause anything that causes pain or bleeding. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or vaginal products, since they can obscure symptoms or irritate tissue.

Seek urgent help for heavy or persistent bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, faintness, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Emergency assessment is also appropriate if you feel weak, confused, or short of breath.
